If some piece of information given by your ancestor in a record or document does not make sense, consider the possibility that he/she lied. People ‘fibbed’ for many reasons, including –
-wanting to get married
-wanting to enlist in the military
-not wanting to be drafted in the military
-trying to avoid past debts
-simply trying to escape their past by hiding from a spouse, parents, children etc.
Yes, an outright lie can be difficult to research around, but people did lie about their age, place of birth, name, marital status, etc. Sometimes you have to accept the possibility and not get hung up on it.
